We wish to alert you to a concerning scam currently targeting individuals submitting insurance claims, particularly those who have reported their motor vehicles as stolen. Hollard has come across this scam and urges all clients to remain vigilant.
Hollard has received reports of two scam variations:
Fake Vehicle Recovery & Towing Request Fraudsters, pretending to be police officers, contact claimants and claim that their stolen vehicle has been found in a neighboring province. They then request a payment (typically under R5,000) for towing the vehicle back.
False Police Clearance Certificate, fraudsters contact individuals whose stolen vehicles have already been recovered. They claim that a fee is required to issue a police clearance certificate—again requesting a small payment via E-Wallet or at retail stores such as Pick n Pay or Checkers.
Please be advised:✅ These requests are not legitimate.✅ The South African Police Service (SAPS) will never request payments via E-Wallet or through retail deposit methods.✅ All interactions regarding your claim should be directly with your trusted broker.
What You Should Do:🔒 Stay vigilant and cautious if you receive unsolicited communication regarding your claim.📞 If you are contacted and unsure of the legitimacy, contact your broker immediately.📢 Report any suspicious activity to your broker or the SAPS Fraud Hotline.
Your safety and peace of mind remain our top priority. Let’s work together to stop fraud in its tracks.
